Thanks to the great feedback from our growing body of IJFR users, we are happy to launch v1.1. Of course it is free of charge. If you have the original email, you can use those links. If not, you will have to register again to get the links via email (sorry).
Changes are listed here:
- --added support:
----Canon sraw
----Canon 50D
----Panasonic LX3
----Sony .arw files
----Sigma DP-1
----Leica M8 (if dng file has embedded preview) - --fixed

I am happy to address questions and comments below (but please read the read_me file and/or user guide ) first.
My thanks to Imagenomic for their quick response in getting this new version completed.
Enjoy and please send your friends and co-workers here to get their free copy of IJFR. Thanks...

I cannot get this new version to extract anything from the RAWs produced by my Canon 50D.
I had version 1.0 installed, so I uninstalled it, and installed version 1.1.
However, when trying to extract files, I point it at a directory of 50D RAW files, but it just says:
Files Scanned: 53
JPEGs Extracted: 0 Total - 0 New
Total Time: 0 sec
Average Time per File: 0.00 sec
It creates a "extracted_jpegs", but no jpgs are created in that directory.
Note that it works fine with RAWs created by my Canon 350D, but fails with RAWs from my 50D. Also note that these are full-size RAWs from the 50D, not the cut-down sRAW files.
I definitely have version 1.1 installed - and the InstantJPEGFromRAWExt.dll is dated 14 Oct 2008 (version 1.0 is dated a few months earlier).
Any ideas why it's failing?
Martin,
Did you reboot after installing v1.1? That is probably it.
Michael
Any timeframe for when we'll see Vista 64 support? This program excites me, but I cannot use it right now as I use Vista 64.
Tested 1.1 with Canon sraw works great Thanks Michael..
Please note I did the install. You need to re-boot for 1.1 to take effect.
Michael WhiBal works great.. I love it.. Now I just need to always remember to use id.. Duhhh....
Thanks again
David,
Re: Vista 64. It is a big job, and our free utility has to take a back seat to the real work that has to get done (that pays for the free utility). But it is in the works. When I have a feel for the time frame I will post it.
Thanks for your understanding..
Michael
Bingo - a reboot fixed it.
I'd like to see more configurable options, including:
-ability to specify a custom prefix
-functionality to only extract smaller size (ie without native size)
-ability to specify custom directory name where extracted files are placed into
cameras are d90 & lx3. when ijfr is applied using native and smaller sizes checked all i get is 160x120 in both folder for both cameras. i'm sure it gave me full-sized jpegs before with v1.0. this on a mac and i did reboot after the 'install'. also, the documentation shows a date of 10/23 but the plugin itself shows a last modified date of 05/29. what's up with that?
thanks,
/guy
Guy,
The new version shows V1.1 in the progress dialog. If that shows you have the new one running properly, if not not. I suspect you are not installed properly. Drag the existing ijfr.plugin from the context menu folder to the trash. Then draw the new one in and force quite the finder. You should be good to go for both LX3 and d90.
Martin,
-ability to specify a custom prefix
--wish list (WL)
-functionality to only extract smaller size (ie without native size)
--We have to extract the large in order to make the small. So just delete the folder if you do not want them. Takes no time to make them compared to the resize. Sop it is simply for the KISS factor.
-ability to specify custom directory name where extracted files are placed into
--WL with some likelihood of happening in the future.
Thanks and enjoy...
Michael
hhi martin: i removed all files associated with ijfr--even a .cfg file i found in /Library/Applications Support, emptied the trash, and restarted. i then installed a fresh copy of ijfr v1.1 with the same results. both the d90 and the lx3 raw files would still only extract to native jpeg at 160x120 pixels.
but then i copied a half-dozen raw files to a new desktop folder and it worked fine, extracting 4288x2848 for the d90 and 1920x1080 for the lx3. is that latter figure right? the pdf guide you provide says there is a list of sizes in the appendix, but the file has no appendix.
i have to conclude that for ijfr to work properly there can be no files in the target folder other than the raw files since both of my original folders had jpegs mixed in with the raw files. was that the problem? i don't think i had to isolate my raw files with v1.0 but i can't remember.
/guy
Guy,
The IJFR behavior is nothing that I can reproduce here, nor have I heard it from other users (and we have a LOT of users). I think you need to get to basics
--delete \Library\Context..Menus\ijfr.plugin
--re-boot
--Drag new ijfr.plugin to \Library\Context..Menus\
--re-boot
Please advise.
Michael
hi michael: i'm sorry to have to report that the behavior remains that ijfr will only create native and sized jpegs at 160x120 if there are jpg files in the directory acted upon along with the raw files. ijfr even inserts '160' into the file names of the sized files even though i have it set at '900'.
this is on a mac pro running 10.5.5. i have completely cleaned out ijfr from my system several times and i've tried copying the DCIM/100_PANA and DCIM/100NCD90 folders to other locations. the only thing that i've found as a workaround is removing the associated jpg files from the image folder leaving only the raw files.
/guy
Hi Guy,
Thanks for the feedback. Let's take this to email and see what we can find out. I will report back here for the others if when we find the issue. if others have the problem please post or email. Thanks..
Michael
Guy (and others),
I have confirmed the behavior that you are reporting. It indeed is related to the JPEGs in the Raw folder. Here is what I believe to be true.
--This bug is limited to OS X version 10.5+ (Leopard).
--Does not seem to affect Windows or 10.4.x (Jaguar)
--The problem is that the embedded thumbnail in any JPEGs in the raw folder are also being processed along with the raws.
--So IJFR performs its intended task, along with the unintended extraction of the tiny thumbnail from any JPEGs that might in its group of selected files.
Several workarounds...
--Simply delete the unwanted extracted tiny thumbs.
--Do not have JPEGs in the raw folder.
--Instead of right clicking on the raw folder, simply select the raw files *within* the folder and then right click on one of them.
Sorry for the problem. We will look into it..
Michael
hi michael: replied to your email. just one note though, on my system ijfr _only_ creates the 160x120 thumbnails, it does not create any other size jpegs--neither the native sizes or any requested smaller size.

Thanks for the feedback.
Michael, I am a sports photographer for Florida State. When Scott Kelby told me about your program (Instant JPEG from RAW), I immediately downloaded it and thought I had died and gone to heaven. Having this program as a tool became invaluable as it allowed me to stop shooting in RAW + JPEG - I cringe at the thought of not shooting in RAW just in case an opportunity comes around for one of those once in a blue moon images, so I always use RAW; but, I need the JPEG files too because I can clean JPEG's up in Photoshop much quicker than RAW files and get my disc(s) to FSU a lot faster. With your program, I can also free up space on my cards by shooting in just RAW, not to mention being able to squeeze a few more frames before the buffer fills up.
Everything was hunky-dory until my trusty old desktop computer at home started having mother board issues. Not being able to do without a desktop, I shopped around and picked up a new one. Until this new computer, I did my best to stay as far away from Vista as possible but that is no longer an option as everything now comes loaded with Vista. I ended up getting a great deal on a model with everything I needed, but the operating system is 64 bit. As you know, Instant JPEG from RAW doesn't work with 64-bit Vista.
Please, please, please, please, please expedite the process of rolling out your program so it will work with 64-bit Vista. I'm begging you, please. Don't make me sacrifice a chicken in order to align the moon and the stars such that it will cause you to pursue RAW nirvana for mankind. As a former Brevard County comrade, I'm hoping you will make my life easier if only because you feel sorry for someone who actually lived in Titusville.
Hi Mike,
I appreciate all of the kind words. If I could do it I would, but my days of writing code are over. I know we are working on it, but it is not a one line fix, and as you know we gain no revenue from this utility, so it is hard to make this the highest priority in the shop. But we are aware of the need to add this capability..
Stay tuned...
Thanks again...Michael Tapes
I have an iMac G4, running OS-X 10.4.11. I just downloaded and installed IJFR v1.1. The initial test showed a progress bar but never processed any files, as described by Martin above. I restarted the system per your instruction but I still get no JPEGs extracted. The files are from a Canon 40D. Am I missing something? Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Mal
Even more info...
I apologize for the multiple entries, but I now have a solution to my original problem. It seems this has been a case of "user error". IJFR worked fined on one of each type (10D and 40D) of raw image when they were copied to another folder, but failed on the original folders. The original folders were setup as "read only" and IJFR couldn't create new entries in those folders. The read only permission must have been set when I copied those folders from my archive CD, as it was not a deliberate act.
Thanks,
Mal
Mal,
Thanks for the info about the read-only folder. That could catch ya big time. Thanks and enjoy..
Michael
Michael, I twice tried installing IJFR on my WinXP machine. With both versions, the installer hung up with the progress bar at around 90%, and the installer process consuming 50% of both cores. I tried running it with msiexec /l to see what it's doing. Based on the repeated log entries (before I killed the process), it looks like the installer is in an infinite loop. Any ideas?
I installed your excellent extraction tool on my XP based PC and started clicking on raw files in photoshop bridge CS3 and lightroom 1.4 to no avail. Nothing came up to work IJFR.
I then right clicked the windows "start" button and clicked on the IJFR option listed, which brought up the IJFR dialog box. I then clicked "extract" but this failed to extract any jpegs. It advised 0 selected and 0 extracted. I then closed down the IJFR dialog and right clicked on a Raw image in bridge. This gave me a list of options which did not include IJFR so I selected "reveal in explorer", and then right clicked on a raw image in explorer. This brought up a list of options which included IJFR extraction. I then left clicked on this which brought up the extraction IJFR extraction dialog. This placed extracted jpegs in a sub folder of the folder containing the raw images. Is this how its supposed to work? I had expected just to click on a raw image in any application to get the IJFR dialog. I not complaining, just thought this info might be of value.
Regards Mark
Ted.....Sorry for the problem, but no other reports like this, so it certainly looks like a problem on your side. No one has reported any issues with the installer.
Mark...It is designed to work in the Mac Finder or Windows Explorer, but if an application uses the file tree provided by the OS it can work in those circumstances as well. It certainly will not likely work inside of an Adobe application.
The proper usage is to right-click on a raw file or files, or a folder of Raws, and have IJFR create the folder(s) of extracted JPEGs.
Clear?
Thanks..

hi michael:
just thought i'd note that apple has updated leopard today to support d90 raw files (yay!). now i can start my aperture tutorial.
any updates on the minor ijfr 1.1 bug in leopard?
