A DNG file can be generated by the camera, an application, or a utility like the Adobe DNG Converter. Generally (except for the camera) there is an option as to where to put a preview image (an embedded JPEG) into the DNG or not. So some of your DNG files may not in fact have a JPEG in them to be extracted.
